To provide a more intuitive understanding of the skills required for each occupation, the ESCO portal includes a Skills Relevance feature.
The skills relevance feature is based on Skills-Occupations Matrix Tables, which quantify the share of each ESCO skill group within an occupation. This share is calculated based on the existing skills-occupations relations in ESCO occupations and skills and therefore reflects the importance of a skill group for an occupation.
When viewing an occupation profile, users can see a graph that displays the distribution of skill groups associated with that occupation. Each segment of the graph represents a skill group, and its size reflects how relevant that group is for the occupation. By hovering over a segment, users can see the number of skills from that group.
The European Commission developed this feature to help users quickly grasp which domains of skills are most relevant for a given occupation by offering a clear, visual summary of skill relevance. The visualisation enables users to immediately understand the broader skill areas that define an occupation. This makes it easier to interpret the classification and to engage with ESCO data in a more meaningful and accessible way.
The following example illustrates the Skills Relevance feature for the ESCO occupation of metal drawing machine operator:
